Hello, my name is Tom Gehring. I’ve been practicing law for over thirty-nine years. It’s been a long haul and I’ve enjoyed it. Almost all of my work has been high-end litigation, trials, mediations, and lots of pro bono work. Needless to say, it’s kept me very busy.
In 2014, I went to Spain for six weeks to hike the Camino de Santiago, the Way of St. James, the Francés route. Yep, the same trail featured in Paulo Coelho’s book, The Pilgrimage, and Emilio Estevez’ movie, The Way, staring his father, Martin Sheen. It was a much needed break, and it gave me time to reflect upon what I’m going to do with the the rest of my life. Then, in 2016, I returned to Spain to hike the Camino de Santiago again, the Del Norte / Primitivo route, the Northern Way, which starts in Irun in eastern Spain, and goes all the way to Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia in northwestern Spain.
Eventually, I put together this simple little website. Before then, I never needed one. Just win cases, or settle them favorably, stay off radar, and prepare, prepare, prepare. But, then I published a book, Settle It! . . . and be Blessed, When You’re in the Fight of Your Life, so now it’s a little harder to stay off radar. Besides, I really enjoy the opportunities to speak around the state and country, and hope to do it much more as I go forward toward my next phase of life, my next Camino. I love to do my part in helping people settle the conflicts in their lives, whether the conflicts are lawsuits, business disputes, family problems, or personal problems. I love passionate people, and as I often say, you can’t pursue your passion in the middle of your conflict.
As time has gone on, all the big trials I had, the A-list clients, teaching, counseling——all the things a good lawyer could ask for——don’t seem to matter as much anymore. All I can say is, the experience has been fantastic, and I’m just seeking ways to give back . . . a lot, if possible. In reality, trial lawyers like me are . . . a little crazy. Basically I’ve spent my whole life at the crossroads of human conflict in various roles as lawyer, advocate, mediator, arbitrator, and Judge pro-tem. So, I want to help. As I emphasize in my book, Settle It!, if you settle matters quickly in your life, you will, indeed, be blessed. And, if by chance I can play a role in that regard, then, I, too, am blessed.
Then I published my second book, The Problem Solver. It’s on Amazon. I am thankful for more opportunities to speak, and hopefully help people. More books are on their way.
And, so it is, that on June 11, 2018, I will again do another Camino, The Camino de Assisi, The Way of St Francis.
